5 Steps to Making a Difference in the Tech Booth

IMG_4927In a church like mine, the tech booth is bustling with people every Sunday morning.  They move sound board faders, check batteries, design slides, move lights, run cameras, stream online services, and many other jobs that many of us will never know about.  They get there early (all amped up on caffeine) and stay long after everyone else has left the building.  We love them all!

What does it take to move an ordinary tech volunteer into a SUPER tech volunteer?

Here are 5 Steps to Making a difference in the Tech Booth?

  1.  A heart to learn and not act like a “know it all” – A lot of people that are interested in serving in the tech ministry are very knowledgeable before they ever enter the tech booth. Many have experience in computers, networking, other churches, work experience, etc.  It is extremely easy for them to bring an ego into the ministry.  We don’t need more smart people in the tech people.  We need more people with a heart to serve.  Having a pliable heart that is eager serve and learn will take an ordinary tech person and move them to a super tech volunteer!
  2. A knowledge of what the end product should look, sound, and feel like – It is crucial that the people responsible for creating a visible and audible atmosphere to have a good understanding of what the end goal is.  There are tons of different methods and atmospheres of worship in the modern church.  Are they trying to make it like a concert they attended last week? Are they trying to make it like the church they grew up in last week?  If good communication hasn’t happened between the leadership and the volunteers, then there will probably always be tension and corrections made.  Take them to a conference, another church, show them youtube videos. Get on the same page.
  3. The ability to prepare as much as possible – Thoroughly going over the service schedule before rehearsal is crucial. Details make ALL the difference.  Examples: Know when there is a guitar solo. Know when the video element needs to start. What kind of mood do we want the lighting to convey on song 4? What should overall band volume be when minister comes to stage?  The list goes on and on…
  4. Anticipate change –  Be ready to go with the flow when changes happen.  In our environment, we sometimes need to make a change because we made a mistake in planning or mishaps/breakages/outages necessitate a change. Hardware breaks. Singers lose their voice. Lightening storm blows up a circuit.  It has all happened, and the service must go on.
  5. Be alert, focus, and give it all you have got!  Sometimes, it can be monotonous in the tech booth. A long song with no changes, a long sermon, during the offering… It is tempting to get on your phone and check Facebook or Instagram.  You might even want to take a pic or send a text. Heck, you might want to catch up on your sleep by taking a catnap.  RESIST the temptation.  We need you on your toes and ready for action. You never know when you are needed to make an adjustment.

The Grace of JESUS CHRIST takes ordinary people
(like you and me) and makes them EXTRAORDINARY for the sole purpose of building HIS Kingdom.

Today I want to answer the question, “If we have extraordinary empowerment from God, then why do we face so much pain and difficulty? Shouldn’t we be untouchable?”

Jesus tells us that there will be a day when we are untouchable. That day hasn’t happened you. Until it does, he will empower us to face the pain and difficulty in extraordinary ways!

Living like Jesus might seem like a paradox. He was quite peculiar. Jesus made an impact on the world around him. He made it better. At the same time, he refused to be tempted or sucked up in what the world could offer him: political success, popularity, wealth, safety, comfort. He was at total peace, yet was murdered. His eye was on the eternal kingdom that was present and tangible on earth in spurts and disconnected pockets. Yet, he had a vision and knew that someday the dividing curtain between the eternal kingdom and the earthly realm would someday be dissolved. When in doubt or question, he picked to put the eternal kingdom as a priority over earthly/temporal things.

We are to LIVE LIKE JESUS. Extraordinary! Not just in practice but in principle.

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 Now we have this treasure in clay jars,

This is one of those phrases in the Bible that really stick out to me. I want to know WHY would Paul use this metaphor of clay jars? Obviously, clay jars were a big part of their culture back then.

He is saying that we store this incredibly valuable truth…the light of God…the glory of God that we see in Jesus in clay jars.

Clay jars were regarded as fragile and as expendable because they were cheap and often unattractive. clay pots that contained everything from wealth to worthless things, from foods to liquids. Because jars, pots, and vessels were made from clay, they were subject to breakage and, therefore, were inexpensive and discarded in short order. He uses an illustration taken from everyday life:

So the paradox Paul is expressing is that although the container is relatively worthless, the contents are priceless. Although the gospel treasure is indescribably valuable, the gospel’s ministers are of little value in comparison.

Jewish rabbis used to say: “It is impossible for wine to be kept in gold or silver vessels but in the most inferior of containers, namely, in earthen vessels. Similarly, the words of the Law are kept only in the person who is most humble.”

An analogy is the valuable Dead Sea Scrolls, which were stored for more than two millennia in ordinary clay jars that were decaying while the scrolls remained intact.

Paul was an example of this as he was beaten up, abandoned, shipwrecked.

2 Corinthians 4:7 …so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.

We hold the gospel as it were in clay jars to exhibit the phenomenal power of God, so that everyone may see that not we but God is its source. The original text reads: “the extraordinary (quality of the) power.”

2 Corinthians 4:8 We are pressured in every way but not crushed;

Physical or Psychological Difficulties

Clay pots that do not break even when placed under great strain. To be hard pressed or “afflicted” is to be troubled by physical or psychological difficulties. While Paul and other ministers of the gospel endured many afflictions as did frail earthenware, they were not crushed. They were not overcome by these afflictions because they had the treasure of the gospel of Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:8… we are perplexed but not in despair;

Confusion and Discouragement

Perplexed, but not in despair. To be perplexed is to be in a state of confusion and discouragement because of afflictions and troubles. Despair in this context means “utter lack of all hope.” Even though Paul and his company were deeply troubled at times, they never gave up because they had a great treasure.

2 Corinthians 4:9 we are persecuted but not abandoned…

hunted down or chased by others

Persecuted is to be hunted down or chased about by others. Persecution was widespread against the early church. The persecution of the ministers of the gospel indicated how much they were earthenware jars. Yet, Paul insisted that even in persecution they were not abandoned. God never left them alone. He was with them in all of their persecutions. Paul portrays himself as a fugitive hunted down by his adversaries.

2 Corinthians 4:9 …we are struck down but not destroyed.

Setback, Demoted, Fired

When Paul spoke of being struck down, he was talking about a wrestling term. BodySlam! There is a big difference between a bodyslam and defeat.

The path to victory for your family will have many setbacks, but you will be victorious over your foes.

2 Corinthians 4:10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. 11 Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. 12 So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you.

Paul said there were many reasons for him to boast about this spiritual prowess. He was firmly established as a man of God. Had so many amazing visions, dreams, miracles.

2 Corinthians 12:7 So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. 8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Get a vision of how BIG God really is! Believe that he is big enough for your thorn. Believe he is big enough that even with the thorn, your life could be awesome. How could that be? Jesus’ answer: My Grace is All You Need!

For some reason, God knows that you don’t need complete deliverance at this point. At the same time, he won’t leave you alone. He provides his grace to lead you through it in an EXTRAORINDARY WAY!

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:16

In his essay, The Efficacy of Prayer, C.S. Lewis said,

“It would be even worse to think of those who get what they pray for as a group of court favorites, people who have influence with the throne. The refused prayer of Christ in Gethsemane is answer enough to that. And I dare not leave out the hard saying which I once heard from an experienced Christian: “I have seen many striking answers to prayer and more than one thought miraculous. But they usually come at the beginning; before conversion, or soon after it. As the Christian life proceeds, they tend to be rarer. The refusals, too are not only more frequent; they become more unmistakable, more emphatic.

Does God then forsake just those who serve Him best? Well, He who served Him best of all said, near His tortured death, “Why hast thou forsaken me?” When god becomes man, that Man, of all others, is least comforted by God, at His greatest need. There is a mystery here which, even if I had the power, I might not have the courage to explore. Meanwhile, little people like you and me, if our prayers are sometimes granted, beyond all hope and probability, had better not draw hasty conclusions to our own advantage. If we were stronger, we might be less tenderly treated. If we were braver, we might be sent with far less help, to defend fare more desperate posts in the great battle.”

Romans 15:13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Discipleship Through the Kairos Circle

You can listen to this teaching on podcast by clicking here.

Our leadership team first learned of this tool while reading Building a Discipling Culture by Mike Breen. We highly recommend that book for further study.  However, the best method is to practice it with other believers.

Jesus told us in Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations….

This doesn’t mean go somewhere and then make disciples but means “as you go… Whatever you are doing… Make disciples.”

Discipleship is not something that happens because you went to a class. You don’t graduate from Bible school as a disciple.

Mark 1:14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at handrepent and believe in the gospel.”

The time has come. The Kingdom of God is at hand.  Kairos is original Greek word used here– meaning an event, an opportunity – a moment in time when perhaps everything changes because it is the right time.

A Kairos Moment – is when the eternal God breaks into your circumstances with an event.  Kairos moments signal opportunities to Grow.

Examples Good/Bad:  Weddings, Graduation from School, New Babies, Losing a Job, Loved One Dying, Diagnosis of Disease.

These are the moments that are prime for making disciples.  How we deal with these moments will determine how outlook of God and our faith journey.

These moments can draw us into depression, anger, and fear OR they can bring us to a new understanding of God, deepen our faith, and be a catalyst for change.

As a pastor and leader of others, the Questions I have for you are:

  • How are You Ministering to People in these crucial moments?
  • Do you realize when they are happening?
  • Do you have the capacity to pray and walk with people through them?
  • How will you DISCIPLE them in these seasons of life?

Remember what Jesus said about these moments: “…the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

I want to show you a way to work with your congregation through Kairos Moments.

We are desiring for our churches to grow in their relationship with God. To Mature. To be Disciples and then Make Disciples. In order for that to happen, there has to be a solid core faith and trust in God. So many, new believers have head knowledge of God, but the gospel has yet to be sown deeply in the heart. That is where TRUST comes in. Trust can only be earned through life’s ups and downs. Walking through these situations and then knowing on the other side that He is always in control.

  • Because God is Good, I don’t have to look elsewhere for Satisfaction.
  • Because God is Gracious, I don’t have to prove myself to others.
  • Because God is Great, I don’t have to be in Control.
  • Because God is Glorious, I don’t have to be afraid.

HOW FIRM ARE YOU ON THESE TRUTHS? They directly tie into your stress level.  When these truths about God are in our heart and head, then our lives are based on faith and not worry.

These process can work in two settings. Small Groups: 3-10 people or One-on-One.  We will work through this with a shape. A circle.

Through this process we are helping people answer and understand 2 Key Questions.

  1. What is God Saying to me in this season?
  2. What am I going to do about it?

Basically, those questions come from the last phrase of Mark 1:15 when Jesus said to Repent and Believe.

The first process we want people to go through is

REPENTANCE

Repentance in this Process has 3 Steps

  1. OBSERVE – simply discussing what is going on. What are the facts of the situation? When someone is going through a big life moment, the first thing you need to do as their mentor and discipler is LISTEN. Ask a lot of questions. Learn where they are coming from.  Be slow to speak and quick to listen.  RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO FIX PROBLEM. RESIST THE FEAR AND INTIMIDATION.
  1. REFLECT – We reflect back on our observation. Why did we react the way we did? Why do we feel the way we feel? Why has this event brought on this emotion?
  1. DISCOVER – In order for repentance to have lasting change, we need others in on this process. We need to discuss our shortcomings with others and reflect back on where we did not trust God.

Take the observations and the reflections and compare them to the truth of God.

How valid are your emotions?

We do not want to rush through repentance. Taking the time to look at all angles, pray, reflect on emotions, and then discuss with a brother or sister in Christ allows God to do a thorough work in our heart. We are forced to bring our shortcomings and lack of Trust to the truth of the Gospel. True repentance happens when the Gospel of Jesus confronts the lies in our heart and head and we humbly submit to Christ.

After we have walked through repentance, Jesus says to:

BELIEVE

Faith is not simply a belief, but it is the substance of that belief. It is a display of that belief. This is where the final three steps take place.

  1. PLAN – look at when or where these emotions and cravings begin. When are you tempted to feel this way? What is the catalyst to begin this cycle? Learn to recognize where the problem areas are. Through Kairos moments we realize that our core problem is that we have used something or someone in the place of God.
  1. ACCOUNTABILITY – If we want our plan to succeed, then we need at least one more person holding us accountable. Change doesn’t happen in private. Accountability is not going through a check list. Accountability partners are not there simply to verify that you haven’t sinned lately. They are there to help you look into your heart and go to the depths of your faith and trust in God.
  1. ACT – Acting is the final and natural step after repentance, planning, and accountability. Acting as a disciple of Christ is following Jesus command of repenting and believing.

Going through this circle is not a one time thing. It will happen for you and the ones you disciple multiple times. Once you get the hang of it, it is possible to work through it on your own, but make sure to always have someone there to confirm or correct where you are drifting.

The Boy who was God’s Friend

Rob's avatarAbiding in the Kingdom

The clouds were hanging down like big grey mushrooms, and the wind was picking up from a norther that was blowing in. It was early October, in the year of 1935, near Guthrie, Oklahoma, and what had started as a nice warm day was now getting cold, dark and forbidding to the little blond haired boy making his way through the brush. Papa was laid up again, and the cows had to be in the barn before it got dark. When you are five years old, it’s not easy being the man of the house, but Wayne never hesitated when they told him to go get the cows.

Problem was, it was cold, and his old thin hand-me-down shirt did little to protect him. It was getting dark and scary looking. Feeling all alone, he stopped beside an old tree stump that blocked part of the wind and peered down…
